The Kiriani Farmers’ Cooperative Society comprises 3 different factories, or coffee processing stations, in the Tharaka Nithi region of Kenya. Approximately 300 member farmers bring their crops to the washing station in Kiriani, where their freshly harvested coffee cherries are depulped, fermented, washed, and dried.
Most of the farmers grow their crops at 1600 meters above sea level on the eastern slopes of Mt. Kenya in the lush, volcanic soil rich in organic matter. This lot is made up of SL28 and SL34 varieties, both prized for their high cup quality.
In the cup, look for highly complex acidity that begins with punchy tropical fruit notes of guava, melon, and grapefruit. As it cools, the sweetness deepens and notes of peach, apricot, blackberry and cardamom spice appear. It’s juicy and smooth throughout, with a creamy body supporting all the acids. The lingering aftertaste leaves a sweet hint of honeydew melon and florals.
We are super stoked to offer this Kenyan microlot in collaboration with Genuine Origins Coffee Project, as part of their Pride of Kenya microlot series.
